How BMI works

Body Mass Index (BMI) estimates whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. It's calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For most adults, 18.5–24.9 is the healthy range. BMI is a fast, useful screen, but it doesn't measure body fat directly or account for muscle mass, so treat it as one data point rather than the whole picture.

BMI calculator FAQ

What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered the healthy range. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is in the obese range.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²). This calculator does the conversion automatically if you enter imperial units.
Is BMI accurate?
BMI is a useful quick screen for populations, but it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat or account for body composition, sex, age or ethnicity. Very muscular people can read as 'overweight' while being lean. Use it as one signal alongside waist size and how you feel.
What should I do about my BMI?
If your BMI is outside the healthy range, small sustainable changes to diet and activity help most. Tracking what you eat makes progress visible — the Nutari app logs calories and macros from a photo so you can see trends over time.

This calculator gives a general, educational estimate for adults and is not medical advice. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat and may not suit athletes, older adults, pregnant people or children. Talk to a doctor about what's healthy for you.
